The tournament was originally scheduled for December 4, but was rescheduled to make way for a Varsity High School tournament on that date. The teams must have at least one bowler age 55 or older on the day of the tournament. The other two bowlers may be any age, but must be ADULTS (no YOUTH bowlers). All bowlers will bowl three regular games of bowling and then team up for Baker style bowling (like the high school and college bowlers use). Entry forms are available at any Portage County bowling center or they can be downloaded on the Tournaments page of this web site. Mixed Tournament Results The BMR Pro Shop team of Mike and Kim Zukowski and Scott and Angela Smith scored 2752 in the last squad of the tournament to win the 2011 Mixed Tournament at Kent Lanes on November 13. The same team won this tournament with a score of 2759 in 2007, also at Kent Kanes. The second place team of Mike Smelko, LIz Smelko, Cheryl Tennant, and Denny Tennant scored 2619. The Tennants took second place in 2007 with different partners.
Doubles champs were the team of Barb Deakins and Jim Bailey. Barb and Jim were recruited by Herb Hamilton to bowl with him and his daughter, Mistine Wensel, in the team event. Although Barb and Jim knew each other, they had never bowled together before Saturday. Their score of 1435 topped Herb and Mistine's 1335, who had to settle for second place.
Bailey was the Men's All-Events champ with a total of 1469, while Kim Zukowski won the Women's All-Events with 1390. YOUTH Tournament Results Jen Flachbart sent results from the YOUTH tournament at Sky Lanes on Oct 6. You can view her report here. Our hats go off to the hard working people who do so much for the young bowlers in Portage County. Two Tournament Opportunities The next two events are really fun tournaments.....the Portage County Mixed Tournament and the Junior-Senior Trio Tournament. The Mixed Tournament (November 12-13) is for members of both the Men's association (Portage County USBC BA) and the Women's association (Portage County USBC WBA). The two associations take turns hosting the event that features four person mixed teams and two person mixed doubles. The teams must have two men and two women and the doubles must be one man and one woman. You can bowl with your wife, girlfriend, mom, daughter, or just someone you like to bowl with. All bowlers must be sanctioned in Portage County, but if you want to invite a sanctioned bowler from out side the county, they simply have to pay the local dues ($5 for men, $7 for women) and then they can bowl in this tournament and several other locally sponsored tournaments. For an additional fee you can also enter the All-Events contest where your scores from doubles and singles are added together to determine the All-Events champion. The Junior-Senior Tournament, which was changed from Dec 4 to Dec 11, features teams of three people, at least one of which must be age 55 or older. The other two must be adults of any age. Women may bowl in this tournament if they are sanctioned in the Portage County USBC BA (they may pay the local dues the day of the tournament). Part of the total score for the teams is from regular bowling and part is from "Baker" format bowling. In Baker format, the bowlers take turns bowling the frames. This is the format used by the high school and college teams. You can get entry forms for both tournaments at any Portage County bowling center or download them from the Tournaments page of this web site. Tournament Change The Junior-Senior Trio Tournament has been rescheduled from Dec. 4 to Dec.11 at Twin Star Lanes. The Portage County USBC BA moved the date so that a High School tournament could held on Dec.4 at Twin Star. If you have not bowled in the Junior-Senior, you are missing a great time. The format is your team of at least one senior (age 55 and over) and two other adults bowl three regular games, and then six baker games. This is the equivalent of bowling five games altogether. It is really fast and lots of fun. Scratch Doubles Results The team of Bill Flachbart and Jim Dukes outlasted the duo of Frank Testa and Tony Carson in the finals to claim championship status on October 23 at Kent Lanes in the annual Scratch Doubles Tournament sponsored by the Portage County USBC BA. Testa and Carson had qualified in the top position for the stepladder finals with a total of 2473 for the five game set, followed by Flachbart and Dukes with 2316, Troy Damicone and Brian Walker with 2307, and Joey Ault and Shawn Stevens with 2294 in the fourteen team field.
In the first game of the finals Damicone and Walker were topped by Ault and Stevens 439-403, before Flachbart and Dukes outscored Stevens and Ault in a close match 479-468. Then in the final game Flachbart tossed a 246 with a turkey in the final frame to lead his side to a 436-421 victory. The winners shared $500, second place $250, third place $150, and fourth place $126. Makan Tops Field in Scratch Singles
Brian Makan led all qualifiers, averaging 253, in the Scratch Singles Tournament held at Kent Lanes on October 9 and went on to win the $450 first place prize. Makan , who throws two-handed from the left side, tossed 10 strikes in the last game of the step-ladder finals to post 278 against Chad Akins ($225) who scored 241. In the first game of the finals Matt Tennant bested last year's winner, Austin Smith, 194-176, and then was defeated by Akins 227-197. Tennant pocketed $110 and Smith $85. The highest score in the qualifying round was 279 by Makan, followed by 278 by Kody Ornousky. Twenty-one bowlers got up early to bowl five games in the qualifying round in the ten o'clock tournament. Then the field was cut to the top four for the step-ladder finals. The Scratch Doubles Tournament will also be held at Kent Lanes on October 23 at 10 AM. You can get entry forms at any Portage County bowling center or on this web site on the Tournaments page. The criteria for receiving awards have been modified and new awards have been added. Make sure to update your software for the current awards. The Board meets again at Sky Lanes on Aug 28 at 5:00. County Meeting Honors Winners The Portage County USBC BA conducted its annual meeting at AMF Twin Star Lanes on March 10. The Board provided a banquet before the business meeting and passed out trophies and winners' jackets afterwards. The Board recommended keeping local dues at the same $5.00 level as last year based on the excellent financial position that it finds itself. Most local dues in Northeast Ohio are well above the $5.00 level. The Board also changed the status of Persh Roher to that of Director Emeritus, freeing up a regular Directorship. Brian Makan was then elected to fill that position.
Hamilton Repeats in the Senior Herb Hamilton waited until the day of the tournament to enter, then won the Senior Memorial Tournament for the second year in a row. Herb said he wanted to see how he felt before entering and didn't mind paying the $5 penalty for a late entry. Evidently, he felt pretty good. Twenty-eight seniors, including three women, entered the event held at West's Mogadore Country Club Lanes on March 31. The tournament is divided into four age divisions with one person qualifying for the finals from each division. They were Dave Wyatt, Division A (70 and over); Ray Holyfield, Division B (65-69); Don Morrow, Division C (60-64); and Bill Flachbart, Division D (55-59). Each of these qualifiers also receives a free entry into the State Senior Tournament next November. Hamilton qualified as the best score from the rest of the field. Flachbart had the best score in the tournament with a 279 right out of the gate. He later shot a 266 in his final game, but could not match Hamilton's total in the two game finals.
Prize List
Youth News Jen Flachbart sent us the results of the Portage County Youth Singles/Doubles Tournament. Click here for her report. County Tournament pay-outs Below is the prize list for the tournament. In Team, Doubles and Singles there are two columns: one for Handicap and one for Scratch. Teams and individuals in each event can cash in only one list and receive the greater amount for which they are eligible. If there is xxx beside the team of individual, it means they have cashed in the other column. In All-events, bowlers can cash in both handicap and scratch because they pay separate entry fees for the two events.
County Tournament Ends The last two days of competition changed the standings considerably. Four teams moved ahead of Portage County Youth Board including the team that won the tournament last year, Kent Lanes who won the tournament by 3 pins over Bob's Pro Shop in the final squad of the competition. We will pay 8 teams (6 handicap and 2 scratch), 14 doubles (11 handicap and 3 scratch), 25 singles (20 handicap and 5 scratch), 7 handicap all-events, and 6 scratch all-events.
